The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed an outbreak of cyclosporiasis, a parasite-based foodborne illness that can cause weeks of severe diarrhea.

Nearly 7,000 confirmed or suspected cases have been recorded across 34 states. This unusually large outbreak has resulted in 1,645 confirmed cases and 141 hospitalizations.

Official case counts likely capture only a fraction of infections nationwide. It is expected that the outbreak will get worse before it gets better.
