Kate Douglass made history twice in the women's 50-meter freestyle at the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Irvine, California. After setting a world record during the preliminary heats, Douglass smashed her own mark in the evening final on Saturday to win gold.

Douglass improved on the previous world record of 23.55 seconds set by fellow American Gretchen Walsh on June 18. In her gold-medal swim, the American clocked a stunning 23.19 seconds.

In another event, Australia's Lani Pallister led wire-to-wire to win the 800-meter freestyle. This victory upstaged US superstar Katie Ledecky, ending the American's long unbeaten run in one of her signature events.
