Warsaw has registered its first same-sex marriage following court rulings requiring Poland to recognize such marriages registered abroad. This development occurs even though Polish law does not currently permit these unions.
In November, the European Union’s highest court ordered Poland to register same-sex marriages that were entered into in other EU member states.
Poland's Supreme Administrative Court also ruled in March that same-sex marriages contracted in other EU states must be recognized in Poland, incorporating a 2025 EU ruling. This judicial action opened a path for the country to recognize unions legally conducted in other European Union member states.
