New York Archdiocese agrees to $800 million sexual abuse settlement

The Archdiocese of New York has reached an $800 million settlement with approximately 1,300 survivors of sexual abuse by clergy members and lay workers. This agreement marks one of the largest clergy abuse settlements in the United States.

The settlement is the second-largest of its kind, following an $880 million deal reached by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles in 2024. In addition to the financial payout, the agreement requires the archdiocese to publish the names of those credibly accused on its website.

Archbishop Ronald Hicks confirmed the settlement in an email to clergy following the announcement by attorneys for the survivors. This case reflects a broader trend across the country, where dioceses have paid hundreds of millions of dollars in damages and created programs to compensate victims without going to trial.
