Two thieves broke into the Renoir Museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer on the French Riviera early Tuesday morning. The burglars stole four works of art, though they dropped one painting as they fled the scene.
Bryan Masson, the mayor of Cagnes-sur-Mer, stated that surveillance camera footage identified the suspects. The mayor's office estimates the value of the stolen works at 9 million euros.
Regional police have confirmed that an investigation is underway and are currently hunting for the suspects. This theft follows a spectacular heist of crown jewels at the Louvre Museum in Paris last year.
The Renoir Museum, the most famous attraction in Cagnes-sur-Mer, is located between Cannes and Nice on the Mediterranean coast. The museum is housed in the final home of impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir, where he lived before his death in 1919.
