Bandits kidnap dozens in Nigeria after inviting them to peace talks

Armed bandits in northwest Nigeria abducted dozens of villagers on Sunday near Magamin Diddi village in the Maradun municipality of Zamfara State. While police stated that 39 people were seized, some residents and officials believe the number of those abducted could be as high as 50.

The victims were meeting with the parents and relatives of a suspected kidnap kingpin in the forest for reconciliation and peace engagement. The meeting aimed to broker peace and ease movement restrictions imposed on the community, but the bandit leader arrived and abducted the participants.

Security forces have deployed personnel and intelligence assets to locate the victims. According to a resident of Magamin Diddi, the armed group is demanding 125 million naira ($91,880) for the release of those abducted. Several individuals were reportedly released by the kidnappers to convey these ransom demands back to the village.

The incident underscores a complex security crisis in northern Nigeria involving illegal mining, kidnappings for ransom, and a decade-long insurgency in the northeast that has killed thousands and displaced millions. In Zamfara, bandits carry out mass raids and killings that have disrupted farming and displaced thousands. Consequently, many communities have resorted to negotiating directly with armed groups to gain access to farmland or secure the release of abductees, a practice authorities have discouraged but struggled to prevent.
