South Korea has registered its highest temperature since records began in 1904. The southeastern city of Yangsan reached 42.5C at 1:26 pm on Sunday afternoon.
Authorities have issued emergency heat wave instructions, warning that indoor spaces without air conditioning are dangerous. People in affected areas were told to immediately stop all outdoor activities.
Much of the country is under heat warnings, with many cities seeing temperatures in the high 30s. This follows five consecutive days of temperatures passing 40C.
Scientists say that heatwaves are becoming more frequent due to the human-driven climate crisis.
