Wimbledon announces record 20% rise in prize money amid pay row

sports tennis

Wimbledon has announced a record prize money pot of 64.2 million pounds ($85.8 million) for this year's championships, representing a 20% increase over last year. All England Club chair Deborah Jevans stated at a press conference that the total includes player per diems, with singles champions each earning 3.6 million pounds ($4.8 million).

The announcement follows persistent calls from players for a larger share of revenues from the four Grand Slams. More than a year ago, 20 leading players signed a letter to the heads of the tournaments seeking increased prize money and a greater voice in decision-making processes.

Recent actions have highlighted the urgency of these demands. Top-10 players recently limited their press conferences at Roland Garros to 15 minutes as a symbolic protest. Additionally, No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka suggested players should organize a boycott if their needs are not met, while other top players, including Jannik Sinner and Coco Gauff, have also voiced their concerns.
