More than £1bn has been pledged for Sudan at a conference in Berlin, surpassing the funding target set to address the country’s humanitarian crisis. The commitments aim to mitigate suffering and offset funding shortfalls in a nation devastated by three years of conflict, where two-thirds of the population – 34 million people – require assistance.
Germany will provide an additional 20 million euros in aid this year, with further commitments under review. The conference focuses on civilian needs as hunger and poverty increase across Sudan.
The war is entering its fourth year, with international attention diverted to other conflicts. Organisers hope the Berlin conference will refocus attention and fund urgent projects to ease the suffering of the Sudanese people.
Despite the increased funding, prospects for a ceasefire remain distant as the conflict continues.
