A 14-year-old student killed several people and himself in a shooting spree on Friday in Nonthaburi province, northwest of Bangkok. The attack, which took place at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in the Bang Kruai district, is one of Thailand's worst mass killings since 2022.
The rampage began at dawn when the teenager shot his grandparents dead at their home. He then traveled to the school, where he opened fire around 10 a.m. and ran amok for 40 minutes. Police report the gunman used his grandfather's gun to fire at least 26 rounds, with another 34 rounds of ammunition found on him.
The shooting resulted in at least nine deaths, including the gunman. The victims include the boy's grandparents, a math teacher, a Thai language teacher, a guidance counsellor, a student affairs administrator, a secretary, and a 12-year-old girl. At least 23 other people were wounded, and according to Thailand's Health Ministry, 14 remain hospitalized, seven of whom are in critical condition.
The incident ended when the student took his own life, though some reports indicated that police officers may have shot him. No motive has been established for the attack. The event has placed fresh pressure on gun laws in Thailand, a country with one of the highest rates of gun ownership in the region.
