Russell Brand, a 51-year-old comedian and actor, has appeared at Southwark Crown Court in London to testify in his trial regarding charges of rape and sexual assault. Brand is facing three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault, and one count of attempted indecent assault. He denied all allegations, describing the court appearance as the day for truth and justice.
During his testimony, Brand asserted that consent is fundamental, essential, and more important than sex itself. He told the court there was no question in his mind that he obtained consent from a complainant due to their talking and intimacy. Brand characterized his life as very promiscuous, stating that he had sexual encounters in countless scenarios and kissed hundreds of people while attempting to be friendly, consensual, and warm.
Brand argued that consensual encounters have been unfavourably reframed decades later and blamed the allegations on defamatory and fictitious media reports. He testified that a documentary detailing allegations about his behavior had a devastating impact on his life, leading colleagues and friends to turn against him. He further noted that he could not find anyone to testify on his behalf.
The trial includes statements Brand gave to police between 2023 and 2025, in which he denied the accusations against him.
