President Donald Trump announced Friday that he will temporarily waive tariffs on up to 300,000 metric tons of ground beef imported into the United States. This move is intended to ease costs and lower prices for American consumers, with the beef imports to be sold at below-market rates until just after Election Day.
The decision comes as beef prices in the U.S. have soared in 2026. Ground beef prices, now averaging nearly $7 a pound, remain historically high due to a reduction in the nation's cattle herd. Cattle ranchers have trimmed their herds in response to drought and low margins, helping push up the cost of the staple food.
The push to lower prices is a key concern ahead of the November midterm elections. While economist Steve Hanke stated that tariffs are simply taxes on American consumers, cattle groups have expressed disappointment in the president's post.
