A bench-clearing brawl erupted Tuesday night between the Atlanta Braves and Los Angeles Angels, leading to ejections for pitcher Reynaldo López and designated hitter Jorge Soler. The incident began after López threw a high-and-tight pitch to Soler, who had previously homered off López and been hit by a pitch.
Soler charged the mound, and both players exchanged punches, with López landing a blow on Soler’s helmet. Players and coaches from both teams intervened, including Braves manager Walt Weiss, who tackled Soler. The Braves led 4-2 at the time of the altercation.
Major League Baseball announced Wednesday that Soler received a seven-game suspension, while López initially received a seven-game suspension but agreed to a reduced five-game suspension. Both players were also fined undisclosed amounts. Both suspensions are currently on hold pending appeal.
The Braves went on to win the game 7-2, snapping a three-game losing streak. Ozzie Albies hit a home run for Atlanta, and Reynaldo López struck out seven before his ejection.
