Rep. Haley Stevens, D-Mich., has stunned party officials by endorsing Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers. The announcement comes in the final stages of a tightly contested battleground race that could determine which party controls the U.S. Senate.
Stevens formally backed Rogers after losing the Democratic primary for Michigan's U.S. Senate seat to Abdul El-Sayed by a slim margin in August. Tensions between the two had been high, and Stevens had previously refused to endorse El-Sayed.
The endorsement follows a rupture between Stevens and El-Sayed, occurring after Stevens was uninvited to a joint unity event with El-Sayed on Sunday. Instead, she attended an event with Rogers, the candidate backed by President Donald Trump, at the predominantly Black Perfecting church in Detroit.
Stevens shared her endorsement in a video posted to X. This extraordinary rebuke of her party's nominee arrives on the eve of the midterm elections in a race critical to the Democratic party.
