Sony Group Corp. has announced that it will stop producing physical discs for all new PlayStation titles starting in January 2028. The company is embracing an all-digital future, which will require consumers to download new games via the PlayStation Store.

After January 2028, new games will be available exclusively in digital format. While these titles will still be sold at retailers, they will be provided as digital codes only. Sony noted that existing disc-based games will continue to work on compatible hardware.

The move comes as an increasing number of people buy and download games online. By fully abandoning physical media, Sony becomes the first major console maker to do so, bringing a definitive end to buying second-hand games and swapping titles with friends.
