Seven people are trapped in a flooded cave in central Laos' Xaisomboun province after entering the site on May 19 to search for gold and wildlife. Heavy rain triggered flash flooding and landslides that blocked the exit, leaving the group stranded. One person managed to escape before the entrance was sealed and alerted authorities, but the status of the seven trapped villagers remains unknown.
An international rescue operation has entered its seventh day, racing against time and severe weather. Divers from Thailand, including experts who assisted in the 2018 rescue of a youth soccer team from a Thai cave, have joined the efforts. These divers have begun navigating flooded sections of the narrow chamber to reach the area where the group is believed to be trapped.
The search effort has been hampered by difficult terrain and persistent heavy rain. Authorities stated that the cave is often visited by villagers searching for gold deposits, despite repeated warnings against entering the cave due to safety concerns. While state media has reported on the assistance from Thai rescuers, the Laos Ministry of Foreign Affairs has declined to comment on the situation.
