The Trump administration has refunded approximately $100 billion to companies that paid levies under its liberation day tariffs. This amount represents roughly 60% of the total $165 billion in revenue collected by the government under the policy.
The refunds follow a US Supreme Court ruling that determined the collection of the tariffs was illegal and violated the law. Customs officials reported these figures to the US Court of International Trade on Tuesday.
Despite the court's decision, the Trump administration has taken steps to effectively re-create the IEEPA tariff regime using other legal authorities.
These actions are already facing court challenges, with states claiming that the new levies serve as a pretext to re-impose tariffs that were ruled illegal by the US Supreme Court.
