The US State Department has approved a potential $24.3 billion sale of up to 48 Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II fighter jets to Saudi Arabia. These stealth warplanes are considered the world’s most advanced military aircraft. The deal now requires approval from Congress before it can proceed.
The purchase comes as Saudi Arabia faces drone and missile strikes from Iran and Yemeni Houthi rebels. The Houthis have escalated attacks and are seeking control of the strategically important Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Consequently, Riyadh is seeking help from Washington in its war with the Houthis.
The proposed sale has raised alarms among some lawmakers and U.S. intelligence agencies, who warn that China could acquire or steal the warplane technology. Additionally, Israel has previously expressed concerns regarding Saudi Arabia's acquisition of the F-35s, despite efforts to normalize relations.
