Indonesia closes Mount Bromo national park as wildfire expands

environment natural disasters

Indonesia is battling a growing wildfire threat during an unusually dry season. Authorities warn that drought, strong winds, and the El NiƱo weather pattern have increased fire risks across the country.

A raging fire has broken out near Mount Bromo, an active volcano and popular tourist destination in East Java. Since the blaze began last Monday, approximately 176 hectares have been razed.

Authorities have closed the popular national park until further notice as firefighters struggle to contain the blaze. Efforts to extinguish the fire are being hindered by strong winds, thick forest, and steep terrain.
