Inter Miami announced the signing of 34-year-old Brazilian midfielder Casemiro as a free agent on Wednesday, but Major League Soccer has launched an investigation into tampering allegations against the club. The league's probe casts a shadow over the arrival of the five-time Champions League winner, as MLS stated it is gathering all relevant information and will refrain from further comment until the review is complete.
The investigation centers on Casemiro's discovery rights, which were previously held by the LA Galaxy. Under MLS rules, clubs must negotiate these rights with any team that previously listed a player before signing him. Although Inter Miami and the Galaxy have reached a settlement, MLS confirmed that the terms of the agreement will be withheld until the tampering investigation concludes.
Casemiro has signed a deal through the 2027 MLS Sprint campaign, with an option to extend his stay through June 2029. Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham welcomed the signing, calling him a winner who has achieved a great deal in the game. The club noted that the midfielder is currently waiting on the necessary visa before he can debut.
Casemiro joins Miami after leaving Manchester United at the end of last season, where he won the English League Cup and FA Cup. His career includes eight seasons at Real Madrid, where he won five Champions League titles and three Spanish league titles. Internationally, he has made 91 appearances for Brazil and won the 2019 Copa America. He has played in three World Cups, starting all five of Brazil's matches in this year's tournament before their elimination in the round of 16.
