Anak Krakatau volcano, located in Indonesia's Sunda Strait between the Java and Sumatra islands, erupted on Sunday. The volcano erupted for 30 seconds at 3:53 a.m. and again for 16 seconds approximately three hours later.
The eruption spewed volcanic ash into the airspace, forcing eight airports to halt operations over the weekend. All flights at Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta International Airport were cancelled, and nearly 3,000 flights were disrupted across the region.
The transport ministry stated that the airport closures affected 170,000 people, though other reports indicate more than 340,000 passengers were stranded. These disruptions extended into Monday, with seven airports remaining closed at that time.
Flights to and from Jakarta resumed early Tuesday after a two-day closure. While Indonesia has reopened several other hubs, two of the original eight airports remain shut.
