Japan protests after US Marine arrested on suspicion of murder in Okinawa

defense & military

A 20-year-old US Marine, identified as Devin Jacob Ballard, has been arrested on suspicion of killing and robbing a Japanese national in Okinawa. The suspect is alleged to have killed 39-year-old Anna Yagi at a hotel in Naha, where he reportedly stole her backpack and wallet. Ballard has denied the allegations.

The Japanese government has lodged an official protest with Washington following the incident. Officials have urged the United States to fully cooperate with the probe and to enforce strict discipline among its military personnel.

The arrest risks rekindling tensions over the American military presence on the Japanese archipelago, particularly in Okinawa, where incidents involving US service personnel are not uncommon.
