Richard Hughes has stepped down as Liverpool sporting director to seek a fresh challenge, with reports indicating he is set to join Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal. Hughes, 47, reportedly informed the club of his intention to leave early this year. His departure means Liverpool is now searching for its fourth sporting director in four years.
Hughes joined the club in 2024, overseeing the difficult transition following the departure of manager Jurgen Klopp and the appointment of head coach Arne Slot. While Liverpool won the Premier League title the following season, the club endured a disappointing campaign last term despite spending around $500 million on new signings. Consequently, Slot was fired at the end of the season and replaced by Andoni Iraola.
The move comes less than two months after Michael Edwards exited his role as CEO of football for club owner Fenway Sports Group. FSG president Mike Gordon, who is leading the search for a successor, praised Hughes for leading the football operations department and overseeing recruitment while providing valuable support to the coaching staff during a period of change. Liverpool confirmed that the process to find a new sporting director has already begun.
