Massive crowds mourn Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Iran and Iraq

Millions of Iranians descended on Tehran to pay their respects to the slain supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Huge crowds of mourners have marched through Iran and Iraq as part of a six-day funeral procession.

In Iraq, funeral processions began Wednesday in Najaf, where thousands of mourners were present. Khamenei's coffin made its way through the streets of Najaf to the shrine of Imam Ali, Prophet Muhammad's son-in-law. In the cities of Najaf and Karbala, home to two of Shiite Islam’s holiest sites, hundreds of thousands attended commemorations for the leader, who extended Iran’s influence in Iraq.

Throughout the proceedings, mourners displayed Iraqi and Iranian flags and chanted slogans against the US and Israel. The multi-day funeral ceremonies will end with the burial of the slain supreme leader in his hometown of Mashhad on Thursday.
