Venezuela Police Block Protests Over Pay and Pensions

Thousands of protesters in Caracas marched towards the presidential palace on Thursday demanding pay raises and pension increases amid a severe cost of living crisis. Union leaders, retirees, and public sector workers participated in the demonstration.

Security forces blocked the march following a recent, unspecified pledge from Interim President Delcy Rodriguez to increase wages. Many Venezuelans are struggling to survive on extremely low salaries.

The monthly minimum wage remains at 130 bolivars (€0.23), unchanged since 2022, and is significantly below the UN poverty line. These issues have persisted since January.

Police used tear gas to disperse the crowds.
