Antonio Guterres will complete his second five-year term as U.N. Secretary-General on Dec. 31. His successor will be tasked with revitalizing an organization in crisis that is facing pressure to reform.
Currently, four women and three men are in the running to succeed Guterres. The Security Council is expected to identify the new secretary-general through a series of straw polls in the coming months.
A first informal Security Council poll on July 30 showed former Costa Rican Vice President Rebeca Grynspan as the early frontrunner. Former Guyanese Foreign Minister Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett followed in second place.
