Russia hits Ukraine energy sites as Ukraine resumes Russian refinery strikes

armed conflict defense & military

Russian forces have launched a series of massive strikes against Ukraine's energy infrastructure, including power grids and oil and gas facilities, for three consecutive nights. A recent ballistic missile attack killed three people in Kyiv and plunged hundreds of thousands into darkness. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the attacks as ostentatious disrespect toward the energy ceasefire promoted by US President Donald Trump.

In response, Ukraine has announced it will resume strikes on Russian oil refineries. President Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine's patience with the surprise energy ceasefire has run out because Moscow failed to hold up its end of the proposed deal. While Russia accused Ukraine of attacking two oil refineries to show Kyiv was not moving toward the truce, Ukraine denied the claim.

President Zelenskyy also accused the United States of a dangerous withdrawal of support critical to Ukraine's defense. He noted that Ukrainian forces have been left without US early-warning alerts for incoming ballistic missiles, further undermining the security of the energy infrastructure supposedly covered by the ceasefire.
