US Customs and trade judge seek path for billions in tariff refunds

The US Treasury has refunded nearly $22 billion in tariff revenue collected from importers in May. This marks the first swath of repayments since the Supreme Court struck down a major component of President Donald Trump’s trade policy, ruling that the tariffs were imposed illegally.

Officials from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency are appearing in federal trade court to determine a way to refund tens of billions of dollars of these tariffs. As part of these proceedings, an agency official is set to testify regarding the U.S. government’s specific plans for the repayments.

Additionally, a judge has urged the Trump administration to abandon its appeal of an order to fully refund $166 billion in tariffs overturned by the Supreme Court. The judge stated that the appeal was unnecessary and would only create further delays for importers seeking to recover their money.
