Lebanon: UN peacekeepers killed, Security Council meets

world

Three U.N. peacekeepers were killed this week in southern Lebanon, marking a deadly period for the peacekeeping mission as its decades-long mandate nears its expiration. Two of the peacekeepers were Indonesian and died March 30 in an explosion that destroyed their vehicle.

Initial investigations suggest a roadside explosion struck the convoy. Another Indonesian peacekeeper was killed late Sunday when a projectile hit their position. The UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has launched investigations into both incidents.

The United Nations Security Council condemned the attacks and called for de-escalation between Israel and Hezbollah, amid ongoing exchanges of fire in the region. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also strongly condemned the killings.
