A lavish gold ring encrusted with diamonds, sapphires, emeralds, and rubies has been presented to the U.S. ambassador to Belgium to be given to President Donald Trump. Crafted in Antwerp, the ring features 321 diamonds and is engraved with the words "Crafted in Antwerp for Donald John Trump."
The gift comes months after Belgium's diamond industry won the removal of U.S. tariffs on diamond imports. Such ostentatious and often gilded gifts are used by those seeking to curry favor with the U.S. president.
U.S. presidents have considerable discretion to accept gifts from domestic and foreign sources. They may determine themselves whether a gift was meant for them personally or for the nation.
