Houthis strike Aden airport, presidential palace and Saudi Arabia

armed conflict defense & military

Two missiles struck Aden International Airport, the main airport in Yemen's interim capital, on Friday. The Iran-aligned Houthi group claimed responsibility for the attack, stating they had targeted a weapons depot and a military command headquarters. The Aden Security Department reported that a Yemenia Airways flight bound for Cairo was preparing for takeoff when the strike occurred.

Health Minister Qasim Buhaibeh stated that the attack killed five people and injured 16, including site guards and civilian employees. The strike comes as the Houthi rebels showcase growing military capabilities, having repeatedly targeted the airport in Saudi Arabia's capital and seized large stretches of Yemen's Red Sea coast near a key shipping chokepoint. Recent missiles and drones fired toward Saudi Arabia were intercepted, while a Saudi-backed government counteroffensive has so far failed to reverse Houthi gains on the coast.

Despite these developments, Yemeni government forces claim recent advances in Marib, reporting that they neutralised 430 Houthi fighters within a 24-hour period. These events indicate that the flare-up in fighting shows no sign of abating.
