Mediators representing the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Rwanda-backed M23 rebels have agreed on a roadmap for peace talks. The US State Department served as a mediator in the process.
The roadmap sets out specific steps and timelines for talks intended to end the fighting. As part of the agreement, both sides recognized the importance of a standardized method for reporting allegations of ceasefire violations.
The two parties had previously signed an agreement in Doha last year, but conflict has continued in the mineral-rich eastern DRC. The region has endured years of fighting that has killed thousands and displaced millions.
