A powerful gang coalition carried out a deadly overnight raid in Kenscoff, a once peaceful farming community strategically positioned in the hills overlooking Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince. The United Nations reported that at least 47 people were killed and 22 others injured during the assault, which local mayor Massillon Jean described as a night of terror.
The victims included around 40 displaced people sheltering in a church, with some killed execution-style. Some people remain missing following the attack. The hillside town has been plagued by gang violence for months, and the latest raid has prompted anger over the lack of protection from repeated deadly attacks.
The island nation continues to grapple with widespread violence as it seeks to hold its first elections in more than a decade.
