Eight people, believed to be members of the same family, including six children, were found dead inside a home in Grand Haven Township, Michigan. Emergency crews from the Grand Haven fire department and deputies with the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence on Riverside Trail just before noon on Friday.
Upon entering the building, authorities discovered the bodies, some of whom had gunshot wounds. The children's ages ranged from 5 to 15. Capt. Jacob Sparks of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office described the scene as complicated and complex, noting that everyone residing in the home appeared to be deceased.
Investigators believe the fire was suspicious and intentionally set. While official causes of death have not yet been determined, law enforcement stated they are not looking for outside suspects, and one current theory is that the incident was a murder-suicide.
Michigan State Police arson investigators are assisting at the scene. The investigation remains ongoing as sheriff's detectives and state police await autopsy results. Grand Haven Township is located 25 miles west of Grand Rapids.
