Australia’s recorded music industry says tracks wholly generated by AI will be barred from official charts as burgeoning generative technologies threaten artists’ livelihoods. The ARIA chart is drawing a line between artists who use AI as a tool and songs created largely by machines.
Under new rules, recordings developed using generative AI will only be allowed if they are substantially human-made. Tracks that use AI in a supporting role will still be eligible for inclusion in the official charts.
The crackdown comes after a DJ admitted using AI to remix a Madonna song that topped the Australian charts. A variation of Like a Prayer, created using AI-generated vocals and drums, spent 16 weeks in the Australian top 20.
This move comes as AI music floods streaming platforms, with a new study finding 38.5% of music released globally in July involved AI.
