A federal judge has ordered the release of nearly $5.8 million to New York writer E. Jean Carroll. The payment follows a 2023 jury finding that President Donald Trump sexually abused Carroll in 1996 in a New York department store and later defamed her when he denied the allegations.
Donald Trump, 80, denies attacking Carroll and has attempted to prevent her from collecting the award. He and his attorneys filed a motion to pause the payout and made a last-ditch plea to the US Supreme Court, arguing that the court had not yet decided whether to reconsider his appeal. The judge rejected these requests to delay the payout.
Trump has been found liable in two trials for defaming Carroll. He is also appealing $83 million in defamation compensation granted to the writer by a separate Manhattan jury following a trial in January 2024.
