Myanmar moves ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi to house arrest

The military government of Myanmar has announced that former leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has been moved from prison to house arrest. According to state television and a statement from the office of Min Aung Hlaing, the 80-year-old Nobel Peace Prize laureate will serve the remainder of her sentence at a designated residence, likely located in the capital, Naypyidaw.

This transfer comes more than five years after the military coup that removed her from power in 2021. Until now, she had been held in an undisclosed location. Her legal team plans to meet with the detained former leader this weekend following her relocation to the capital by the military-backed government.

Despite the move, Aung San Suu Kyi's son stated that the transfer does not mean freedom and called for the military junta to provide proof of life, noting that she has not been seen in public since 2021. The decision to move the deposed civilian leader to a designated residence is viewed as an effort by the regime to portray legitimacy.
