A federal judge in Boston has issued a nationwide order blocking the US Postal Service from implementing part of President Donald Trump's executive order aimed at tightening rules for mail-in voting. This ruling comes ahead of the November midterm elections, which will determine control of Congress.
US District Judge Indira Talwani's decision expands on a previous order issued in June. That earlier ruling had prevented the administration from implementing the directives in 23 mostly Democratic-led states, effectively covering roughly half the country. The new order now bans the Postal Service from carrying out these directives in every state.
The executive order sought to overhaul mail-in voting policies by creating a federal voter list. It also aimed to involve the USPS in election operations in a manner that would limit mail-in voting.
