Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs and his center-right United List party won the parliamentary election on Saturday, securing the largest share of votes. With 35.3% of the vote, the result is unprecedented for any political party since Latvia regained independence in 1991.
Despite the record number of seats and wide margin of victory, the centrist Prime Minister is expected to fall short of a majority. He will seek coalition partners to govern, though his strong performance allows him to form a pro-European and pro-Ukrainian coalition without the populists.
The victory comes amid growing security threats from Russia, as Baltic countries have warned for months that Russia is mounting sabotage, cyber, and other hybrid attacks across Europe to erode support for Ukraine. This result should help Kulbergs consolidate power in a Baltic nation with the biggest Russian minority.
