US, Iran signal peace progress but remain at odds over uranium and Hormuz tolls

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated that there are good signs an agreement to end the Middle East conflict is in sight. Iran also stated that the latest proposal from the U.S. has partly bridged the gap between the two positions.

Despite these signs, the Strait of Hormuz remains a significant sticking point. Rubio warned that no solution can be reached if Tehran enforces a tolling system in the waterway, and disputes over tolls in the strait continue to cloud the outlook for a breakthrough.

Further tensions exist regarding Iran's uranium stockpile. While the Islamic Republic’s Supreme Leader spoke about keeping the stockpile, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that the U.S. will eventually recover Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium.

Conflicting statements on these key issues have left it unclear whether the U.S. and Iran are closer to a deal, especially amid renewed threats of escalation in recent days.
