Democrats have established a new roadmap for the 2028 presidential contests, positioning South Carolina to lead a six-state gauntlet. This shift pushes Iowa from its traditional top spot, making South Carolina the first nominating contest.
Under the Democratic National Committee’s plan, South Carolina will hold its primary on January 22, 2028. Nevada is scheduled to follow on February 1. Other states participating in the early nominating contests include New Hampshire, New Mexico, Michigan, and Virginia.
The reorganization aims to provide a larger voice to Black and Latino voters as well as labor. By placing these groups at the front of the line, the party seeks to reshape how its next national leader is chosen.
