Firefighters in Spain's southern Andalusia region, specifically in the southeastern Almería province, are beginning to gain the upper hand on one of the country's deadliest wildfires. Around 500 firefighters have been battling the blaze since it erupted Thursday, with better weather conditions on Saturday aiding efforts to rein in the fire. As a precaution, more villages were evacuated overnight.

The wildfire has killed at least 12 people, most of whom were from Belgium or Britain, in a region home to one of the largest expat communities. Officials report that more than 20 people remain missing. The blaze has scorched approximately 25 square miles of forest and farmland, an area roughly the size of Manhattan.

Authorities suspect the fire began when a power line broke as Spain sweltered in extreme heat.
