United co-pilot warned plane was slow and low before hitting light pole

The National Transportation Safety Board has released its preliminary report regarding a United Airlines plane that struck a light pole on the New Jersey Turnpike in May while landing at Newark Liberty International Airport.

According to the report, the crew knew they were too low as they approached the runway. The first officer told safety investigators that he warned the captain the aircraft was slow and a little low before the plane sheared off the pole.

Federal investigators also released an initial report stating a jet struck a truck on a highway while landing at the New Jersey airport. The preliminary report did not assign blame, and investigations will continue.
