At least 53 people were killed and more than 200 others, mostly young recruits, were injured in a ballistic missile attack on a government security forces training camp in Yemen's Shabwa province. The Iran-aligned Houthi movement claimed responsibility for the strike on the al-Alam camp in the Jardan district, which occurred during a training exercise.
The attack involved the firing of three ballistic missiles and has been described as a disaster by the country's UN-recognized government. Those injured were transported to a hospital in the local capital, Ataq, where pleas for blood donations were made.
This incident marks the largest single loss of life since the civil war reignited in September. The strike follows other deadly attacks over the weekend blamed on Saudi-led forces and has shattered a 2022 ceasefire deal that had largely stopped the fighting.
As clashes between Yemeni forces and the Houthis continue to cause casualties on both sides, aid agencies have warned of a growing humanitarian crisis.
