Microsoft Corp. is offering voluntary retirement to thousands of its employees in the United States. This marks the company's inaugural voluntary buyout program.

The offer is open to workers at the senior director level and below. To be eligible for the buyout, an employee's age combined with their years of service at Microsoft must total 70 or more.

The tech giant is providing these early retirements as it continues to invest aggressively in artificial intelligence. As it reorganizes its workforce around AI efforts, the company is also changing how it awards bonuses and stock options.
