Russian forces bombed a school serving as a humanitarian aid distribution center and shelter in the village of Komyshuvakha, located in southern Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia region. The attack, which utilized 3.3 ton bombs, killed at least 33 people and left approximately 50 others missing. Among the casualties were civilians, four police officers, and two rescue workers. Ten people were injured, with five currently being treated in hospital.
The strike was part of a wider offensive that saw Russia launch 289 attack drones, 17 ballistic missiles, and 59 cruise missiles across nine regions, coinciding with U.S. elections. Additional overnight strikes targeted power plants and a medical facility. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the attack on the aid hub as vile, asserting that it shows Russia does not want to de-escalate.
These events took place hours after a rare ceasefire ended, extinguishing hopes of progress toward peace. However, US special envoy Steve Witkoff stated on Tuesday that Washington-led talks between Russia and Ukraine are scheduled to resume next week.
