A 16-year-old opened fire on Thursday at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, killing three children and a teacher. The children killed were aged five, eight, and 11. A seven-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher were also hospitalized with critical injuries.
The suspect targeted a special education classroom before being stopped. Police reported that a teacher tackled the shooter, and a community member—a father of two students—pursued the teenager into the school and shot him dead. Authorities are investigating the motive for the attack and how the 16-year-old, who previously attended the school, obtained the long gun used in the shooting.
The Bend-La Pine School District closed on Friday as the community mourned the victims. The father of five-year-old Rhoam Summer said his family is broken and lost following the violence.
