President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s campaign is preparing to request the annulment of right-wing rival Flavio Bolsonaro's candidacy, alleging algorithmic manipulation by Meta. The campaign claims the US tech giant suppressed Lula's content while boosting Bolsonaro ahead of Sunday’s closely contested presidential runoff.
In response to these allegations, Brazil’s top electoral court gave Meta 24 hours to prove it is treating campaign content from both candidates equally, threatening daily fines for noncompliance. A judge also doubled the daily fine for failing to comply with a previous court order governing political content.
Beyond the legal proceedings in Brazil, Lula's party has filed complaints with the United Nations and the Organization of American States. Meta has since stated that it has completed the implementation of measures to comply with the electoral court's directive to ensure equal treatment of the candidates on its platforms.
