Iran slams US over staff visa denials as World Cup team heads to Mexico

sports football world cup

Iran's soccer federation has accused the United States of vindictive behavior after visas were refused for key managerial and administrative members of its World Cup team. The federation stated that the behavior of the co-hosts contradicts international sports laws.

While players and technical staff have received their visas, several federation officials are still awaiting clearance. Iranian state TV and officials reported that between 14 and 15 members on the administrative and management side have been denied visas.

Due to these visa processing problems, Iran has moved its training base from Tucson, Arizona, to Tijuana, Mexico. The team is set to travel to Mexico as it prepares for its opening match against New Zealand in Los Angeles, which takes place in 10 days. An ambassador noted that they need to enter and leave US soil on the same day as their matches.
