South Korea's National Intelligence Service has informed lawmakers that a summit between President Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un could take place at any time. The agency reported seeing signs that the United States and North Korea may be moving toward renewed dialogue, although it noted there is no known concrete contact between the two sides.
President Trump has been seeking another summit with Kim Jong Un, following three previous meetings in 2018 and 2019. Eyeing a revived bond he claims to have with the North Korean leader, Trump stated in August that it was important to get along with Kim, while noting that Pyongyang now possesses 57 very powerful nuclear weapons.
Trump and Kim met three times during Trump's first term in high-profile summits aimed at securing a denuclearisation deal. Despite Trump once declaring they were in love, no tangible progress was made during those meetings.
